Local High School Student To Serve In Africa
SEI Awards Summer Mission Scholarship to Shannon Craig
SAYRE, PA Dr. Cathy Schanzer, Guthrie Ophthalmologist and Medical Director of Southern Eye Institute today announced that Shannon Craig has been selected for a 2024 SEI Student Mission Scholarship to their mission program in Sierra Leone, West Africa. Ms. Craig is a Junior at Notre Dame High School and a member of Epiphany Catholic Church. She will be one of three USA scholarship students on the mission team traveling to Serabu, Sierra Leone this Summer. Ms. Craig anticipates participating in all aspects of the SEI Mission Program which provides free medical and surgical eye care and sponsors numerous food, water, education, sports, and cultural ministries in this very underserved area of the world. Patients from seven West African countries journey long distances to receive these vital life-support services.
Dr. Schanzer commented that “this is the second year we will have a local student on our summer mission team. The selection of Ms. Craig is a recognition of her strong faith and compassionate stance of solidarity with the poor and needy of our world.” The 2024 SEI Mission Team is scheduled to depart for Africa in early June and will remain there until the end of the month. SEI has been sponsoring student mission scholarships since 2005. Pictured below are former 2023 scholars, Leah and Lizzie Reid, standing alongside Ms. Craig and Dr. Schanzer.
